Warm wipes may not be a necessity for most babies, but we found it to be a soothing courtesy for our daughter. My niece was born premature and used to cry something awful whenever she was changed. We’ve been using a warmer with our daughter and whenever we forget to refill the thing, she sure lets us know as soon as we have to clean her with a cold wipe! Though some people might like to talk you out of buying one of these (I’m looking at you, Mom!), the wipes warmer can make diaper changes just a little more peaceful so I say go for it.
The Prince Lionheart Ultimate Baby Wipes Warmer does the job of warming wipes, but its design is flawed. The lid of the warmer will not stay closed, which can end up drying out the wipes within. The model we bought was the one with a nightlight which is nice and all but doesn’t really illuminate enough for diaper changes. The unit is AC operated and touts antimicrobial qualities. There is an insert which you soak in water and place in the base before adding wipes which is supposed to retain moisture and prevent browning. The biggest problem with this warmer, sadly enough, is the durn lid. It also makes the creepiest squeak noise when it pops open, sort of like a haunted house door in a film. The first time it opened I nearly jumped three feet up! My husband was also not amused.
We put up with it for a couple more weeks til we finally gave up and bought the Munchkin Warm Glow Wipes Warmer which does not have the whole antimicrobial thing or the pad inside (you just add some water to your wipes directly), but at least it still has a nightlight and stays closed.
